Can I combine weekly and topics format?

Valid for Moodle 2.5.  Updated on 1/11/2013.Not directly, but you can accomplish much the same thing by changing section headers.  How you would do this would be determined by whether you initially set the course to weekly or topics format.

For example, let’s assume that you have a ten week course that starts on September 1 but you want three undated sections between the default general section at the top and start of the weekly sections.

If you start with a weekly format

  1. Go to the Settings block on the left and select Edit settings in the Course administration area.
  2. In the course settings form, set the number of weeks/topics to 13.  Change the start date for the course to August 11.  Scroll down and click on Save changes.
  3. In the course, go to the section for August 11 and change the header to reflect what you want to use the section for.  Repeat this for the weeks of August 18 and 25.

Note that the first three sessions will be automatically highlighted at during the appropriate week, but since is before the course starts few students will notice or care.

If you start with a topic format

  1. Go to the Settings block on the left and select Edit settings in the Course administration area.
  2. In the course settings form, set the number of weeks/topics to 13.  The course start date is irrelevant.
  3. In the course go to each section and change the header to reflect what you want to use the section for.  Starting at the fifthth section (after one general section and three topic sections) give each section a name that reflects a date such as Sept 1 – Sept 7 or simply Week 1.

Note that weeks will not be automatically highlighted.  Also if you reorder sections, the dates can get out of order.
