Preventing Students from Starting Discussions

Valid for Moodle 2.8.  Updated on 7/21/2015.At times it may be desirable to prevent students from starting new discussions in a forum.  The simpliest way to do this would be to use the simple single discussion forum format.  However, you can't export the contents of the discussion from this format and there may be other reasons why this format wouldn't meet your needs. 

In most cases, if you want to prevent students from starting new discussions, the discussion topic should be fairly broad.  Then the students can use the first-level replies to define aspects of the topic that should be discussed separately rather than starting new discussions.

Control of discussion creation is handled by the Forum administration.

  1. Open the forum.
  2. In the Administration block, open the Forum administration if it isn't already opened.

  3. Click on Permissions. This will bring up a large display showing all the various permissions attached to forums. Scroll down until you find the Start new discussions item.

  4. Click on the large X right after the various student roles. This removes the students ability to start new discussion. There is no submission action required.
