Meetings and events

The Annual Meeting of the Friends is held each year in the Fall. In addition to a Saturday morning business meeting and lunch, there is typically a Friday afternoon event - a lecture, reading or performance - that is open to the community, followed by a reception and dinner. As an example, here is the itinerary from Fall 2012:

The Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Amherst College Library will be held in Amherst on the weekend of Friday and Saturday, October 5 & 6, 2012. Michael Kasper, Frost's extraordinary head of collection development, who has played a major role in building what we believe to be the finest undergraduate collection in the world, will deliver the keynote address at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Michael is a leading authority on (and creator of) artists' books, and his talk, "Six Favorite Library Books," will serve as a valedictory of sorts: a celebration of his upcoming retirement in January. A reception in the Friendly Periodicals Room will follow at 5:30 p.m. Cocktails will be served at 6:30 p.m. in Lewis-Sebring Commons and will be followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday morning, October 6, the Friends of the Library will gather for a complimentary continental breakfast buffet beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Library will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the Friends' luncheon will begin at 12:30 p.m. All of the events on Saturday will take place in Lewis-Sebring Commons in Valentine Hall.

The Council of the Friends of the Amherst College Library meets semi-annually in the Fall and Spring.

The Friends of the Amherst College Library sponsors events each year including lectures, readings, roundtable discussions, performances and a variety of special events. One of the most popular regular events is the Exam Study Break. The Friends provide the students of the College with soft drinks, fruit and cookies on the Sunday morning of each examination period.
