George B. (Spike) Beitzel 1950, H1987

George Beitzel was interviewed by Richard Fink on July 29, 2010.  Excerpts from the interview are below.  Copies of the interview on DVD are in the open stack video collection of the Frost Library for borrowing, and are available for viewing in Archives and Special Collections or for purchase on request .

George B. (Spike) Beitzel , Class of 1950, graduated from Harvard with an MBA and served as a LTJG in the U.S. Navy.  He had a 32-year career at IBM, retiring in 1987 as a Senior VP/Director.  He served as a trustee of the College from 1966-1987 and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees 1980-1986 when he became a Life Trustee.  During his time on the board, Amherst went co-ed, abolished fraternities, and experienced anti-war protests.  He has also served as a Trustee of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, FlightSafety International, and the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships.  He is a licensed pilot and continues to fly planes to the present time. 

Richard Fink arrived at Amherst in 1964 and was a George H. Corey Professor of Chemistry before his retirement in 2007.  He served as Dean of the Faculty 1983-1988.
