In 1975, nine women who were already at Amherst as part of the 12-College Exchange were admitted as transfer students to become members of the Class of 1976. This was the beginning of coeducation at Amherst. The more than fifty photographs in this virtual exhibition show the new Amherst. The photographs were drawn from the holdings of the Archives and Special Collections and the Public Affairs Office. They are a just small sampling of images that chronicle individual students, student life, campus events, Amherst faculty and staff, athletic events, classroom activities and just ordinary life at the College during last twenty- five years. We hope you enjoy looking at our recent history.
Most of the photographs came to the Archives and Special Collections without identification. As a result, the brief captions are sometimes just a best guess or captions don’t exist at all. We welcome your help identifying the events, people, and dates of the photographs - anything you can tell us. If “this is you” please let us know. Clicking on the light bulb icon (left) will connect you to us electronically. Please write and set the record straight. (Be sure to tell us the caption of the photo.) Thanks.
