Passing Strange, by Martha A. Sandweiss, Amherst professor of American Studies and history, tells the true story of a white man named Clarence King, a celebrated 19th century American explorer and geologist, who assumed a secret identity as a black Pullman porter named James Todd in order to marry the woman he loved, a former slave named Ada Copeland.
