Edward W. Campbell, Jr. '54 died June 2, 2009.
Ned died of cancer at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Baltimore on June 2, 2009, at age 76. Ned is survived by his wife, Patience “Patty” Merritt; son Edward W. Campbell III; daughters Lisa Campbell Sylvestri and Laura Campbell Farnham; brother Ross L. Campbell; and six grandchildren.
Raised in Wynnewood, Pa., Ned graduated from Episcopal Academy, where he had served as class president and member of the student council. He played on the soccer, tennis and squash teams.
At Amherst, Ned participated in college and fraternity athletics, including freshman swimming and varsity soccer. He was a member of the Amherst Christian Association. He met the demanding pre-med regimen to qualify for medical school. Ned maintained close contact with his fraternity classmates. He is remembered for his hard work, high standards, positive outlook, honest and caring demeanor and sunny disposition.
Ned earned degrees at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia and the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore; he did his surgical training at the Univ. of Maryland Medical Center. In 1964, he partnered with Drs. Young and Galleher at the Univ. of Maryland, training urological residents and medical students; in addition, he had a private urology practice. He was full professor at the Univ. of Maryland Medical Center and served as president of its medical board and the mid-Atlantic section of the American Urological Association.
Throughout his 51 year marriage, he was committed to his family, with happy days sailing on Chesapeake Bay, winter escapes to Vero Beach, golf and international travel vacations.
Ned was deeply involved in community service, especially with Habitat for Humanity in both Baltimore and Florida. After his retirement, Ned also volunteered at the Univ. of Maryland Urology Clinic. Ned and Patty’s community respect was dramatically evidenced by the huge turnout at Ned’s funeral.
