What Avant-Garde Was
May 1-August 9, 2009
North Fairchild Gallery
Drawn from the Mead’s rich collections, this installation explores American art from the 1960s to the 1990s with an eye toward cutting edge movements, such as Color-Field Painting and Pop Art, among others. Highlights of the installation include Joseph Albers’ Homage to the Square (1964), Frank Stella’s Of Whales in Paint, in Teeth, &c. (1991), Joseph Cornell’s Untitled (Hotel de l’Etoile: Grand Hotel Fontaine, 1953–1955) and Judy Chicago’s Emily Dickinson Plate (Study, 1977–1978).
