1. One very short paper. I will assign the topic.
2. Three medium length (5-7 pages) papers. I will assign the topic, but you will have some choice.
3. In-class essays. There will be many unannounced, in-class, five- or ten-minute essay assignments. They are designed to encourage thoughtful in-class discussion. Though they will not be graded, I will collect them at the end of class. Completion of these essays will count toward your final grade and they cannot be made up (without prior consent from me or a request from the Dean of Students Office). Unsatisfactory work receives no credit
