Kim was born in Chicago but spent most of his life in Massachusetts, graduating from Deerfield Academy before coming to Amherst. He was a member of Theta Delta Chi and received a master of laws in 1967 from Boston Univ. His career was mostly in risk management and law.
Kim was one of the finest athletes our Class produced, lettering all four years in cross country, indoor relay and track. Somehow his photo didn’t make it into the Olio, but his accomplishments did. He hung them up for good on Sept. 11, 2008, in Boston. Kim’s prowess was not limited solely to competition at Amherst but was a gift he pursued with great success all his life, garnering awards and also coaching boys in a variety of sports.
After service in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, he earned a J.D. at the Univ. of Chicago Law School and moved to Marblehead, Mass., in 1957. He earned a master of laws in 1967 from Boston Univ. His first marriage to Charline Stames produced their two daughters, Pamela and Joli. Kim spent 20 years at M.I.T. as insurance officer in charge of risk management and moved on to TJX in Framingham in the same capacity until he retired in 1990.
His second marriage was to Joan Maling, with whom he had two sons, Michael ’05 and Christopher ’09. When he wasn’t running, Kim was climbing New England mountains or sailing the waters off Marblehead. In addition to his wife, Kim leaves his four children and five grandchildren. A good man and a good full life.
