Roy C. Hopgood Jr.

Roy was with us only as a freshman, but he cherished that Amherst year for the rest of his life.

While he went on to graduate from MIT, he kept in touch with Amherst classmates.  He mentioned in a Class note that he enjoyed attending luncheons of our so-called Eastern Establishment and renewing acquaintance with Orin Lincoln, Milt Spielman and others.

College records show he took part in the New York City Alumni Fund phonathon in 1999 and in “Amherst Comes to DC” in 2000.

Roy died of congestive heart failure December 28, 2006, at age eighty-nine in Wolfeboro, NH, where he had moved in 2003 after a long career as a patent attorney in New York.  He had resided in Glenridge, NJ, for decades.

Roy earned BS and MS degrees from MIT in 1938-39, specializing in electrical engineering, and a law degree from New York University in 1943.  During WWII, he worked at Johns Hopkins on submarine warfare.

After the war, he joined a small patent law office in New York City, then founded his own firm, retiring as senior partner in 2002.

With his wife, Alice, Roy traveled widely.  He said in our 50th Reunion book that they “developed many wonderful relationships in different countries, principally Germany and England.”

Besides Alice, he leaves four children, Carolyn, Barbara, Richard and James; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
