Footwear Protection Program

Amherst college shall provide eligible employees and students with footwear protection which is applicable to the hazard.  Protective footwear is typically intended to provide protection for the toes and soles of the feet, but the Amherst College Footwear Protection Program shall in addition, consider electrical hazard and slip resistance if identified through hazard analysis by the department supervisor(s), the Offices of Environmental Health & Safety and/or Human Resources.

Safety Boots
  • All safety footwear shall be ANSI (Z41-1999) or ASTM (F-2412 and 2413-2005) in accordance with the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). 

All employees who, through hazard analysis, were eligible to get protective footwear are required to wear them, when a potential hazard exists.  Affected employees must wear protective footwear when working in areas where there is a potential for foot injury such as falling or rolling objects, puncture,electrical hazards or the potential for slip and fall incidents in rooms where slippery conditions are the norm, such as a dish-room.

  • All authorized eligible employees can obtain protective footwear in the following ways, once per year.

Safety Shoe Mobiles (2nd Tuesday in August) - Annually

  • Saf-Gard
  • Lehigh Safety Shoes
  • Industrial Protection Products, Inc (IPP)

On line or by Phone

  • Shoes for Crews
    • Slip Resistant Footwear

Store purchase, provided the shoes

  • meet the applicable ANSI or ASTM standards referred above
  • are shown to the Office of Environmental Health & Safety for approval, before reimbursement.

Except for specifically authorized "electrical hazard"or "slip resistant shoes", all protective footwear shall have steel toes, not plastic or composite caps.
