Barry O'Connell is the James E. Ostendarp Professor of English. He came to Amherst in 1972 and has been here since with stretches away at the Folklife Program at the Smithsonian, on a Fulbright to Warsaw University, and as a visitor at Berkeley, at Wesleyan, and for a number of years at the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern, where he worked on overhauling the teacher education program. While at Amherst he has also developed and participated in more than twenty years worth of professional development courses for public school teachers as well as with Massachusetts museums to revise their exhibits and educational programs on American Indians. As of this past July he began phased retirement from Amherst. He will retire altogether in the next two to three years.
