What to Do After Changing Your Password

I. CRITICAL IMPORTANCE

A. Update any saved passwords including in Web browsers, and on mobile devices such as iPads, tablets, personal laptops, e-readers, smart TVs, etc.

Once you change your Amherst password, make sure to immediately update it anywhere it was saved. Failure to update your password immediately could result in your being locked out of your Amherst account. Devices will try continually to log on with your old password, and our security systems will lock your account after 20 unsuccessful logon attempts.

B. Update your password for Amherst wireless networks

Delete Amherst and Eduroam wireless networks from your device and then re-add them using your new password. Note to add back Eduoroam you must be on campus for the first login. Remember the user name for Eduroam is your full Amherst email address.

II. Employees with college-supplied computers

Faculty and staff using their college-supplied computer are used to logging into that computer using their Amherst username and password. Though it isn't necessary that your computer password match your Amherst password, it is certainly more convenient if they do. III. Steps For Everyone

If you saved your old Amherst password in other applications or devices, you will need to change it there so it matches your new password. Some examples are:

  • Amherst VPN client on any device or computer if you opted to have it remember your password.
  • Your Web browser, if you stored your password for any saved logins.
  • Any saved connections to network storage such as Userfiles, WinSoft, MacSoft, Scratch, Storage, etc.

In most cases where you've had an application "remember" your Amherst password, the application will fail to authenticate the first time you use it after changing your password on the website. You'll then be given the opportunity to enter and save your new Amherst password.
