Malvin Cole ’53 died April 12, 2010

Dr. Malvin Cole died suddenly at his home near Casper, Wyo., on April 13, 2010. Born March 21, 1933, in New York City, he attended the Horace Mann School, Amherst and Georgetown Medical School. He and his twin brother, Monroe Cole ’53, who died in 2008, both followed in their father’s footsteps in neurology. After Amherst, Mal trained on the Harvard Service at Boston City Hospital and became a fellow in neurology and europsychology at The National Hospital for Nervous Diseases Institute of Neurology at Queen Square and at St. Thomas Hospital—both in London.
He returned to the U.S. to serve as a captain in the Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington and then entered the practice of neurology, joining the faculty of the New Jersey College of Medicine at Seton Hall where he served as acting director of the Division of Neurology. In 1972, he came to Casper where he was the first, and for many years the only, neurologist in the state. He was appointed clinical professor of neurology at the University of Colorado where he held a monthly teaching clinic, even after he retired from active clinical practice.
Malvin also served a term as chief of staff at Natrona County Hospital and helped bring modern medical tools to Casper, including the first MRI equipment in the state. Throughout his years in Wyoming, he enjoyed his horses and dogs and the wide open spaces. He also maintained a strong interest in international affairs and geopolitics.
Married for 54 years to the late Susan Cole, he is survived by their two sons, Andrew J. Cole, M.D. of Lincoln, Mass., and Douglas G. Cole, M.D. of Wayland, Mass., and their families.
