AMHERST, Mass.- The alumni of Amherst College have elected Alan S. Bernstein, an entrepreneur and member of the Class of 1963, to a six-year term on the college's Board of Trustees effective July 1. Bernstein is a resident of Miami, Fla.

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1941, Bernstein received a B.A. cum laude in economics from Amherst College in 1963. After receiving an M.B.A. degree from Harvard University in 1966, Bernstein worked for an investment firm in Peru, where he met his wife and future business partner, Jayusia Perelman. After working with the Hanover Petroleum Corporation, in 1977 he founded Stratigraphic Petroleum, a privately held company engaged in petroleum exploration and production. In 1993 Bernstein launched his current investment advisory business, Stratigraphic Asset Management, Inc.

Bernstein is a trustee of the Georges Lurcy Charitable and Educational Trust, and also served as trustee of the Ransom Everglades School in Miami. His service to the community includes work with Harvard University, the Sidwell Friends School, the Performing Arts Center Trust in Miami, the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra in Ft. Lauderdale, the Spanish Repertory Theater in New York and the Westport-Weston Arts Council in Connecticut.

Bernstein and Perelman have two children: Leo (Amherst '94) and Marc (New York University '07). His brother Dan Bernstein '59 and niece Margaret Santana '95 also attended Amherst.

The Board of Trustees of Amherst College consists of the president of the college, ex officio, and 20 other members: 14 term trustees, elected by the board, and six alumni trustees elected by alumni of the college. Founded in 1821, Amherst is one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges, with 1,650 undergraduates.

AMHERST, Mass.-Susan Snively, the associate dean of students and director of the Writing Center at Amherst College, has published a poem, "Bus Driver," in the Summer 2004 issue of Prairie Schooner. One of the leading literary journals in the United States, Prairie Schooner has published poetry, short stories and essays since 1926 at the University of Nebraska.

Snively, who has been at Amherst since 1981, is a graduate of Smith College and received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Boston University. She is the author of three books of poems: From This Distance (1981), Voices in the House (1988) and The Undertow (1998). Her poetry and essays have appeared in many periodicals.

Snively also will publish an essay, "Good Girl," in an upcoming issue of the Tampa Review.
