Disease Likely Not a Common Cause of Species Extinction, Amherst Study Finds

Contrary to the widespread belief that endangered species are unhealthy, biology professor Michael Hood has discovered that such plants and animals actually harbor a lower number and diversity of disease-causing parasites than their non-threatened relatives.

Young Alumni Create Investment Software, New Hedge Fund

Alexander Fleiss ’05, Jeremy Newton ’07 and Jonathan Sturges ’05 are three of the four officers of three-year-old Rebellion Research, a New York hedge fund they founded that has been using a “machine-learning program” to invest in stocks. Stories about the firm and its principals have appeared recently in The Wall Street Journal and the Kalamazoo Gazette.
