Employee Council

The Amherst College Employee Council, a representative body of non-faculty employees, works to increase staff involvement in the governance of the College by broadening and strengthening lines of communication within the entire college community.

The Employee Council provides avenues for the College’s diverse staff to participate in policy making, promotes visibility, fosters a supportive work environment, and strives to develop a sense of community among students, staff, faculty, and senior administrators.

Dear Members of the Amherst College Community,

We are very excited about the recent email from the President’s Office announcing the creation of 26 full time, benefited positions in Dining Services. It is also exciting that 19 of these new positions will be offered to staff members currently working as casual employees. We would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the Administration for taking this important and welcome step in recognizing the incredible efforts of our Dining Services Staff. We also hope that this step forward will lead to further review of the College’s casual labor practices and the creation of more full time positions in other areas of the infrastructure.

We would also like to acknowledge that, although the Employee Council has been working with various administrative groups on casual employment practices for quite some time, this important and timely change could not have taken place without the efforts of our constituents, Faculty, and Students working together to bring attention to this challenge. This was truly a community effort and we look forward to more collaborations of this type in hopes of building a more cohesive and inclusive Amherst Community.
