In Memory
Warren Stearns, one of the leading adventurers and entrepreneurs of our class, died Oct. 11, 2010. He prepared at Evanston Township High School. At Amherst, Warren was a leading member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and served as rushing chairman. He played freshman football, lettered in track and served as President of the Freshman Council. He was one of five in our class to receive an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1964.
I remember Warren for his optimism and infectious "can do" attitude. After a career as a product manager at Procter & Gamble he became a pioneering venture capitalist and investment banker. He had a passion for business and adventure. I recall at one of our reunions, his tales of financing the successful search and salvaging mission of the Spanish galleon, Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, which was sunk off the coast of the Dominican Republic in 1641. His consortium salvaged Chinese porcelains, pieces of eight, doubloons and Aztec gold and was considered at the time (1978) to be the biggest undersea treasure haul in history.
Warren was a dreamer and an outdoorsman. He was a licensee of the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation, where he enjoyed skeet shooting with his sons. Warren is remembered by his children for his fighting spirit and undying optimism. He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa; six children, Sally McQuillen, Charlie, Rick (Amherst 1990), Douglas, Christina, and Nicolas Stearns; and three stepchildren, Nichole, Chelsea, and Jonathan Lindsay.
