Neurobiol of Disease Required work

• Attendance at all Thursday sessions of the course, except for personal illness or family emergency
• Participation in discussions of papers in the Thursday sessions
• Attendance at most of the seminars given by guest faculty on approximately 6 Thursdays at 4:30 PM
• 2 or3 class presentations or leading class discussion, most with 1 or 2 other students
• 3 quizzes covering factual material
• 3 2-page response papers about the scientific articles
• A research paper due at the end of finals but can be arranged earlier if students wish; suggested length 10 - 15 pages.   It can go further with one of the conditions we discussed in the course, or you may prefer to investigate a different disease.  Confirm your topic with Prof. George.  The paper should be based in part on reports of original research, rather than being entirely a review of review articles or book chapters. 

Instructions for the response papers: 

At the beginning of class on 3 Thursdays of your choice during the semester, turn in a brief paper in which you discuss a hypothesis being tested in the readings for that day.  Use the research report articles, not reviews.  The length should be 2 – 3 pages double-spaced.  Describe briefly the background leading to the hypothesis, and then discuss how the papers to be discussed that day (or a subset of them) approach the issue, critically analyze the results, and propose further experiments in the same area.
