Bob Minter passed away Nov. 30, 2010, at his home in Waterbury, Vt., after a year-long battle with lung cancer. At his service, held in the Congregational Church of Waterbury, family members, young and old, acknowledged his imprint on their lives.
Following Amherst and the Wharton Business School, Bob joined Minter’s Candies, a major candy producer located in Philadelphia and founded by his father. He became its president in the mid 1950s. In 1977, Bob moved to Providence, R.I., to take over School House Candies, a producer of jellybeans, some of which may have landed on the desk of President Reagan.
He and Evelyn, his wife of 59 years, chose to retire to Vermont in 1994 to be near their children and their families. Bob soon became active in local civic affairs, serving on the Waterbury-Duxbury School Board and taking an active oversight part in the construction of the Crossett Brook Middle School.
Bob is remembered as an active sportsman, being on both the wrestling team and the golf team while at Amherst. His Vermont years allowed greater participation in skiing, a family affair. In retirement, Bob and Evelyn joined a number of international outings arranged by Bill Maloney ’51.
Beside his wife, Bob is survived by a daughter, Sue, currently a Vermont state representative; two sons, William ’80 and George; and nine grandchildren. His oldest son, Robert, predeceased him.
