MILTON F. FLEMING ’42
Milt Fleming passed away quietly on Feb. 19, 2011, after a long illness. Though an infrequent visitor to the campus, he was devoted to Amherst and passed that devotion on to his son, George ’67, at an early age.
Coming to Amherst from Summit, N.J., Milt joined DU, lettered in track and led the cheerleading. He was also elected to the Sphinx junior honorary society.
Following graduation, he went to the USNR Midshipmen’s School at Notre Dame, to Navy Supply Corps School at Harvard and then to service in the Pacific.
After the war, Milt returned to his hometown of Summit and married Louise Williamson. They had three children—George, Dorothy (Vermont College ’65) and Nancy (Vermont College ’66).
During the next 38 years, Milt had a varied business career. After two years of selling stocks and bonds for the Equitable Securities Corp., he worked for the Vitro Corp. of America for 20 years in different administrative positions. Then he served Prodelin, Inc., a design engineering firm, for 10 years as vice president, treasurer and director. He ended his working career with six years as business manager and treasurer of the Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, N.J., retiring in 1984.
Milt then transitioned into a very active retirement of tennis, casting and extensive community service on the Jersey shore and in Vero Beach, Fla.
Milt loved the ocean and was never far from it. Both in Mantoloking, N.J., and in Vero Beach, he lived for the outdoors and the salt air. With his brother Paul, he hosted reunions of the Fleming clan in Mantoloking for many years and thrived in the joy and energy his family brought him.
