RICHARD W. MILLER ’57
We were saddened to learn of the passing of Dick Miller on March 9, 2011, after a short illness. We grieve with Dick’s wife, Christine, and their three children, Christine, Richard and William. Christine shares the following: “We were married for 51 years, and they were good years. I was well aware that our lives were ebbing, which brought to our daily living a sweetness and an appreciation which the life only has when one hears the murmuring of Styx.”
Dick was born in Philadelphia on Dec. 4, 1935. He majored in chemistry and graduated from Amherst with honors. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. Dick was a member of our freshman wrestling team and later a member of the varsity crew.
Dick entered the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, graduating fifth in his class. He completed his sub-specialty training in nuclear medicine and endocrinology at the University of Michigan. Dick and Christine then moved to Marshfield, Wisc., in 1970 where he was instrumental in starting the nuclear medicine program at the Marshfield Clinic.
Dick retired from the clinic in 2003. “I am thinking that retirement suits me fine,” Dick wrote in our 50th Reunion book. “I like that my major daily task is to run the dogs for an hour in our woods.”
Dick was Bob Neale’s roommate senior year, and Dick served as an usher in Bob’s wedding. “Photos of Dick are scarce,” Bob reports. “Apart from his Amherst yearbook photo, he appeared again in our 50th Reunion book and now in his obituary in The Marshfield News Herald. He has the same enigmatic look that I recall from Amherst, with a kind of skeptical pre-smile that very rarely turned into an actual one and a demeanor that suggested to me that he was living just beyond the present moment, always looking more ahead than sideways.”
