Freeman passed away July 8, 2011, in Chicago after a six-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born Oct. 27, 1928, in Pelham, Mass., the son of Linus H. and Ethelyn (Streeter) Jones. Freeman was a townie, graduating from Amherst High School in 1946. In college, he joined Theta Xi and graduated cum laude with an A.B. in chemistry. He received his master’s degree in chemistry from the University of New Hampshire in 1952.
In July 1952, he started working for Standard Oil Co. of Indiana as an analytical chemist in Whiting, Ind. In 1974, he relocated to the research lab in Naperville, Ill., where he continued working for Amoco Corp. until retiring in 1988 after 36 years of service. After retirement, he did volunteer work for Provena McAuley Manor and the Fox Valley DBSA Support Group. On April 2, 1955, Freeman married Judith Stanfield. She passed away in 1982. On March 30, 1984, he married Blanche Brown. She passed away in 2010. Survivors include three daughters, two stepdaughters and a stepson, a brother, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
When Freeman came back for his 50th reunion, he mentioned that his favorite course while at Amherst was the freshman English composition course (although as many of us agreed, it didn’t seem so at the time). He also said then that one of his goals was to live to be 100.
Marc Skertic, his son-in-law, who reported his passing to us, wrote that “he was a true gentleman and professional and was so kind to all. He was upbeat until his last day. He talked about the wonderful time he had at Amherst and about his roots out east.”
