From Amherst Magazine

We learned recently that Richard L. Rosenzweig died on Dec. 27, 2008. Richard was a very successful lawyer who specialized in municipal law and civil litigation. He will be remembered for his remarkable memory and his high ethical standards. He grew up in Pittsburgh and graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1963 and from the law school in 1966. He left Amherst during our freshman year but continued to keep in touch with our class.

His wife, Linda Weinberg Rosenzweig, whose death preceded his, was a Chatham University professor. One daughter, Jane, a Harvard University writing teacher, noted “he had more energy than anyone I knew.” He was a lifelong learner who learned to play the piano in his 60s, played tennis and golf regularly and was very active in masters-level competitive swimming, winning a gold medal in the 65-and-over mixed freestyle relay in 2006 at the YMCA Nationals. He taught courses at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, including the popular class, “Trial by Jury.”

Daughter Amy ’88—a professor at Northwestern—has a very successful career as a biochemist. Indeed, she received an honorary doctorate from Amherst in 2005 and was the recipient of a MacArthur award in 2003. Richard was a proud father when Amy shared a panel platform on the “Future of Scientific Education and the Liberal Arts” with Harold Varmus ’61 and David Kessler ’73 (see Winter 2009 class news).

The class sends condolences to family and friends.
