Jack Blumberg died at the age of 90 on Jan. 27, 2012, at his residence in Hobe Sound, Fla.
Jack came to Amherst in 1938 from Elizabeth, N.J., joining Phi Gam. He was on the freshman swimming team, earning his numerals, and was assistant manager and manager of the indoor relay track team. He was also a very active member of the Flying Club.
After graduation, Jack joined the Army Medical Corps Reserve, attending Georgetown University Medical School from 1943-1946 and attaining the rank of captain. He had additional medical training, aviation medicine at Randolph Field, San Antonio, and a surgical residency at Georgetown University Hospital from 1949-1953. Jack then practiced general surgery in Elizabeth, N.J., until 1976. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American and International College of Surgeons.
Jack married Beverly Gayle Terry (USC ’44) on May 21, 1949. Both were pilots, and they made many flying trips to California, Mexico and Canada in their plane with their dog, a bull terrier (best American breed on the continent in 1975).
For retirement, Jack and Beverly divided their time between Westport, N.Y. (about 60 miles south of the Canadian border on Lake Champlain), and Jupiter, Fla. Jack swam daily and played some golf.
I talked to Jack on the phone in 2010. By then a widower, he had a condo in Tequesta, Fla., but spent little time there because they wouldn’t let him have a dog. Instead he was living in the Edgewood development of Hobe Sound. A shoulder problem prevented him from golfing, but aside from a minor hearing problem, he said he was doing pretty well.
Jack is survived by nieces and nephews.
