Lawrence Douglas, James J. Grosfeld Professor of Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought, will read from his latest novel, The Vices, a finalist for the 2011 National Jewish Book Award. In choosing The Vices as a New Statesman Best Book of 2011, Adam Kirsch described it as “the sharp, stylish, suspenseful tale of Oliver Vice, a charismatic philosopher and art collector, and the provincial academic who falls under his spell ... an elegant parable.” “I’m always careful about calling something Nabokovian,” wrote Ed Park in New York Magazine's Best of 2011 issue, “But this one is Nabokovian—there is no other word.” Those in the know may also enjoy the many parallels between Douglas’s philosophy professor and a well-known professor on campus. If there’s time, Douglas’s alter ego Lars Arffssen may read from his recent work, The Girl with the Sturgeon Tattoo. Douglas will sign copies of his book after the reading.
