We have just been notified that another one of our classmates, Frank Diver Jr., passed away on May 5, 2012.
Frank who was a Chi Psi, came to Amherst from Wilmington, Del., and except for a time in the air force as a navigator, spent most of his life there, where his family owned an automobile agency bearing the family name.
While in high school, he was the captain of the basketball team at the Wilmington Friends School, played football and baseball and also was the president of his senior class. At Amherst, he became the captain of the golf team and apparently carried this talent through the rest of his life, being a scratch golfer, plus setting a course record while still in his teens. He also spent a great deal of his later life around the horses at Delaware Park.
While serving in the air force in Texas in 1951, he contacted polio, which abruptly ended his military career, but which also saved his life. He was kept out of a flight, which left him back home. The flight then was lost with all of its crew members somewhere in the Pacific.
He eventually left the service as a second lieutenant and entered his family business back home in Delaware. In 1986, he left that business and bought the Overhead Door Company of greater Wilmington, which he ran until his retirement last year.
He married Jean Martwick (Pine Manor ’47) of Plainfield, N.J., and last year they observed their 60th wedding anniversary. Their five children, all still living, are Donna Vinton, Chadds Ford, Pa.; Leslie Diver, Palm Beach, Fla.; Lori Ehret, Philadelphia; and Frank W. Diver III and Jean Diver of Wilmington. He also leaves nine grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers.
