Martin died Aug. 25, 2011, in Los Angeles from complications of hypertension.
Martin was born in Hawaii; he attended the Punahou Academy, the same school as President Obama, before coming to Amherst.
After Amherst he served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, traveling to Europe. On discharge, he settled in Los Angeles, working for the Truesdail Laboratories doing research on impurities in food and water.
He retired in 1983 but continued living in Los Angeles until his death. He never married.
