In Memory

Sadly, George Hall Grimes '50 passed away August 31, 2012, in his home in on Mercer Island, Wash.

Born and raised in Highland Park, Ill., to Charles F. and Nadine Hall Grimes, George graduated with his Bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1950 and was a member of Alpha Delta. He married Betsy Mary deSibour (Smith College, 1951) on December 15, 1951, in Washington, D.C.

After graduation, George and Betsy moved to Denver, Colo., where he worked for Colorado Milling and Elevator Company, and they had their three kids. In 1969, they moved to Indianapolis, for a job with Acme Evans, and where George became an avid fan of the Indy 500. In 1972, they moved to Portland, Ore., where George was the GM for Terminal Flour Mills, until a move to Kansas City, Mo., in 1976.

Their final move was to the Madison Park area of Seattle in 1978 where George worked for Fisher Flour Mills, until retirement at age 57. After retirement, he dabbled in real estate and enjoyed his hobbies. George and Betsy travelled during his retirement to Florida for several winters where George discovered his passion for croquet! They took several cruises, visited France and England until Betsy's passing in 2001. George remained a resident in Seattle until his health needs led to his move to Mercer Island in 2011.

George was a member of the Seattle Croquet Society and the Seattle Tennis Club. He was a Master Gardener and loved his roses. His happiest times included fishing in Alaska annually with his sons as well as drift boat trips on the rivers in Northwest Washington to catch salmon and rainbows.

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betsy. He is survived by his loving children: sons George Hall Grimes Jr. of Walla Walla, Wash, and Peter Grimes of Bellevue, Wash., and daughter Elizabeth (Becky) Grimes Hanenkrat '81, of Vancouver, Wash. He is also survived by one of two sisters, Francis Jordan, of Mill Valley, Calif.; along with three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
