The Gerald R. Fink '62 Bioscience Symposium for 2013 will be held on January 31 in Cole Assembly Room in Converse Hall at Amherst College.

The symposium will focus on the development and promise of personalized therapies,  treating children whose parents have serious illness, how future careers in medicine are likely to develop, "environmental epigenetics" affecting disadvantaged populations, the patient/technology interface, and stem cell research.The following speakers will participate:

  • George W. Carmany III ’62, hospital chairman, health care investor, and member of the Advisory Committee on Education of the Harvard Medical School
  • George Q. Daley, the Samuel E. Lux IV Professor of Hematology/Oncology and director of the stem cell transplantation program at Boston Children’s Hospital and professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology, medicine, and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School
  • Rajiv D. Desai ‘84, medical director and neurosurgeon at Maine Medical Center
  • Gerald Fink ’62, founding member of the Whitehead Institute and the American Cancer Society Professor of Genetics at MIT
  • Paula Rauch ‘77, Amherst College trustee; consultation child psychiatrist and director of the Massachusetts General Hospital "Parenting At a Challenging Time Program"; family outreach team leader for the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program. Rauch also plays a vital role at the MGH Cancer Center.
  • Kimberlee Wyche-Etheridge ’87, medical services director for Family, Youth and Infant Health, Nashville Metro Public Health Department
