25th Reunion

JAMES WILLIAM TOBEY 65 Grandview Ave •. , Rye, NY 10580

( 914 ) 967 - 4634

Looking back at the 50 years since Amherst, there are some interesting memories:

Education: Following Amherst, got an MBA at Harvard. Then came many years of part time study-NYU nights, Navy correspondence courses, two insurance designations and after retirement classes at SUNY-Purchase, where I soaked up many of the classics I'd missed.

Military Service: Commissioned in the Navy 12/41 while at Harvard. Went on active duty 3/43 and spent a year stateside. While in Michigan, I met a young woman and made the best sale of my life- she married me. Then to the South Pacific in small carriers, mostly sailing from "Apathy to Tedium". Discharged in early 46 in time to meet our two week old daughter. Stayed in the Reserves and retired at 60 as a Lt Cdr.

Family: Married Marieta (Marty) Krejci of Birmingham, Michon 10/22/43. She had two years at Michigan and managed a third before our first child. She finished her BA at Mercy College and got her MLS at Queens. Marty worked at the Mercy College Library and retired 7/89 as an Associate Professor and Assistant Director. Our five children, who kept us busy and broke, are now good friends. They are scattered but keep in touch. We seem to manage a reunion once a year. Katie lives in Aspen, Col where she designs and produces leather accessories and furnishings. She is to be married in June. Jim (Brown) is a builder and home designer in Vermont. He and his wife Susan had our first grandson in December '89. Priscilla (Boston U and Columbia) is married to David Casey, a lawyer. They have three daughters and live in Carlisle, MA. Bill (St. Lawrence) is one semester away from his MLS at the U of Texas. After an internship at IBM  in Rochester, Minn, he should have his degree in May. Ann, our vagabond, spent one year each at Boston U and San Francisco U. Then, after several years with the US Forestry Service in Alaska, graduated from the U of Alaska at Fairbanks. She is now in the doctoral program in psychology at Buffalo.

Home: We have lived in the Rye area since getting out of service, 30 years in our present house. In 1984 we bought a summer cottage in South Hero, VT on Lake Champlain. Both Jim and Priscilla have a cottage there, so we have summertime with the grandchildren.

Business: Retired from Home Life Insurance 2/82 and don't miss my 35 years of commuting at all. The only problem now is finding enough time for everything.

Community: Over the years we have both been active, now a little less. Marty does Pegasus (handicapped children and horses). I am still involved with Boy Scouts and the Rye Historical Society. We both have alumni(ae) jobs.

Pleasureable Memories: Class reunions, including the Minis, I've made all and Marty most. They make one realize what a good group of guys were in our class and what nice wives they have. For Marty, her long daily walks that have stimulated her interest in nature. Our trips to Alaska and Mexico.

Future Plans: Finding more things to do together. More travel. Summers on the lake. Exploring the possibility of a warmer climate in the winter. Our 50th Reunion.
