AMHERST, Mass.—A turn-of-the-century building on the Amherst College campus that once provided power to the campus will be repurposed to provide space on campus for student activities, college officials announced Wednesday.

AMHERST, Mass.—An agile and speedy vegan dinosaur roughly the height of a pony and the length of an American alligator will be the newest inhabitant of Amherst College’s Beneski Museum of Natural History this spring, thanks to a generous member of the Class of 1977 and his wife. John S. and Leigh Middleton have given John’s alma mater the skeleton of a Dryosaurus altus, a dinosaur that roamed North America during the Late Jurassic period about 150 to 145 million years ago.

Lindsay Stern ’13 is a lifelong writer. The English and philosophy major has served as editor-in-chief of The Indicator, Amherst’s student-run magazine on social thought; co-editor-in-chief of Circus, a campus literary magazine; and an editorial assistant at The Common literary journal. She has mentored high school students in classic literature, designed a free creative arts program for disadvantaged middle-school children and volunteered as a math and reading tutor, among other ventures. She has received multiple honors for her writing—including three prizes from her alma mater— and even published her first novella, Town of Shadows, last fall.

AMHERST, Mass.— Virtuosic guitarist and composer Freddie Bryant ’87, labor activist Madeline Janis ’82, veterans’ advocate Paul Rieckhoff ’98, acclaimed civil rights attorney Barry Scheck, hit songwriter Jim Steinman ’69, former Wellesley College President Diana Chapman Walsh and pioneering AIDS researcher Robert Yarchoan ’71 will all receive honorary degrees from Amherst College during its 192nd Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 26, at 10 a.m. on the school’s main quad.

AMHERST, Mass. — David M. Margulies, M.D., executive director of the Gene Partnership at Children’s Hospital in Boston (CHB) and a member of the faculties of the Division of Developmental Medicine, the Center for Biomedical Informatics and the Division of Genomics at the Harvard Medical School, will deliver the 2013 Amherst College Croxton Lecture titled “Towards Precision Care” on Monday, April 22 in room 4 of Merrill Science Center at 7:30 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
