Amherst Nets Eight Fulbright, Two Goldwater Winners

Two Amherst juniors have been awarded Goldwater Scholarships on behalf of scientific and academic achievement, and eight recent graduates have been offered Fulbright Fellowships to teach and study abroad.

AMHERST, Mass. — Amherst College will celebrate its 192nd Commencement on Sunday, May 26, at 10 a.m. on the school’s Main Quadrangle. The day’s exercises will feature addresses from College President Biddy Martin and senior Reilly A. Horan, as well as the awarding of bachelor of arts degrees to 464 graduates, an honorary B.A. to a military veteran whose Amherst education was cut short by service in World War II and honorary doctorates to seven distinguished guests.

AMHERST, Mass. — Quoting the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, Amherst President Biddy Martin today exhorted the graduating members of the Class of 2013 in her annual Commencement address to remain true to their liberal arts educations, and “hold to your desire for thought, hold to your desire for poetry.” The themes of seeing beauty in the everyday via poetry and “putting together a good life with others,” as Martin put it, were echoed in an at-times humorous and poignant speech by Reilly A. Horan, of Darien, Conn., who was chosen by her classmates to deliver the student address during the college’s 192nd Commencement.

AMHERST, Mass. — Three secondary school instructors who challenged, inspired and moved members of Amherst College’s Class of 2013 will be honored with the Phebe and Zephaniah Swift Moore Teaching Awards during the school’s 192nd Commencement exercises at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 26. This year’s recipients are Deborah Hepburn, an English teacher at Clinton Senior High School in Clinton, N.Y.; Larry Klein, a history and social studies teacher at Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, Calif.; and Fred Murphy, a history teacher at Frederick Douglass Academy in New York, N.Y.

AMHERST, Mass.—The trustees of Amherst College have voted unanimously to award Alan S. Bernstein and Kent W. Faerber, both members of the college’s Class of 1963, the Medal for Eminent Service during commencement exercises on Sunday, May 26.
