This Just In!

This exhibition celebrates the recent growth of Amherst College’s art collection. The more than 100 objects presented here—most on view for the first time—represent a cross-section of the more than 900 artworks that have entered the Mead’s collection since 2007.

Featured works range across artistic media and human cultures, and include important prints by Albrecht Dürer, Edward Hopper, and Elizabeth Murray; stage designs for Boris Godunov by Mstislav V. Dobuzhinskii; photographs by Vik Muniz, Joel Levinson, and Michael Huey; paintings by Jonathan Meese and Sunil Madhav Sen; and a Roman sarcophagus carved with sea creatures and inscribed with a memorial poem to the two children, siblings, whose remains it once held.

All are welcome to attend the opening celebration on Friday, September 6, at 4:30 p.m., when the Mead will debut a new translation of the Latin poem inscribed on the sarcophagus, a translation composed by former U.S. Poet Laureate—and Amherst College professor and alumnus—Richard Wilbur.

In conjunction with this exhibition, Amherst Cinema will present Roberto Rossellini’s Journey to Italy (1954) on Wednesday, December 11, at 7:00 p.m.

The exhibition and series of related events have been made possible with generous support from the Hall and Kate Peterson Fund; the David W. Mesker, Class of 1953, Fund; the Charles H. Morgan Memorial Fund; and the Friends of the Mead Art Museum.
