In Memory

My brother, Jack Conover, passed away at his Palm Springs, Calif., home on Oct. 17, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Julian Darst Conover and Josephine Taylor Conover, and two siblings, John Conover and Janet Conover Werring.

Jack was born and raised in Chevy Chase, Md. Prior to entering Amherst, he graduated from St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. He received an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School in 1953. He then attended Naval Officer Candidate School and served on ships that were home-ported in Norfolk, Va., as well as the Mediterranean Sea. He continued to serve in the naval reserve for 18 years, retiring as a commander in 1975.

His business career brought him to San Diego, where he also maintained a home. He worked in several real estate-related entities before becoming vice president of marketing and administration for Coronado Cays, a large residential marine community.

An avid runner and bicyclist, he participated in many community organizations and racing events. He maintained a love of basset hounds and bred and raised a dozen of them. Barney, the basset, and Bo, the Turkish Angora cat, will miss their constant companion.

He is survived by his husband and life partner of 49 years, Robert E. Hickok, of Palm Springs and San Diego; his brother, Jerry Conover ’55 (Jacquelyn), of Denver, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
