Pindar Field Dinner Series 2012-2013

The Spring 2013 Pindar Field Dinner Series included five formal dinners, each featuring two speakers and varied menus with locally sourced foods including wines with each course. The events were held at the Alumni House, the Lord Jeffery Inn and Lewis-Sebring Dining Commons.

February 23, 2013

Photos  See photos from the inaugural dinner on February 23, 2013. The featured speaker was Amelie Hastie the chair of the department of film and media studies and professor of English at Amherst College. Hastie spoke on the beginnings of film study. All students that registered for the inaugural dinner were offered seating.

March 7, 2013

The second dinner was held on March 7 in the Emily Dickinson Room at the Lord Jeffery Inn. Guest speaker Stanley Rabinowitz, chair of the Russian department and the Henry Steel Commager Professor spoke of his early days at Amherst and how he felt this was not the place for him. He continued with examples of letters received many years later. His talk was an enlightening and amusing reflection of his early years at Amherst. Robert Reeves, the general manager of the Lord Jeffery Inn, spent some time talking about the choices of wines and the local sourcing of menu selections.

March 29, 2013

The third dinner was held on March 29 at the Amherst College Alumni House and featured Javier Corrales, professor of political science at Amherst College. Corrales gave a brief and current talk on the three reasons we should not fear China. The talk was an eye opener for many and there were no political science students in the room. Barbezat
April 5, 2013

The fourth dinner, on April 5, featured Daniel Barbezat, professor of economics at Amherst College. Barbezat spoke about his walk to work and the annoying recording at the stop lights telling him when to walk. He asked when humans lost the ability to make their own decisions. Listen to audio:

April 19, 2013

The final dinner was held on April 19 in Lewis Sebring and featured a selection of tapas and a program of wine tastings presented by Jeremiah Parsons of the Spirit Haus.
