Tom, age 95, died at his home in Washington Court House, Ohio, on Jan. 31, 2014. He was born on Nov. 9, 1918, in Marietta, Ohio. At Amherst he was a member of Delta Upsilon. As a freshman he knew from the start that his goal was to become a physician. He participated in the Pre Med Club all four years. He received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in 1943 and was awarded membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. During World War II he served as an Army medical officer in the European Theater.

Following a five-year surgical residency he opened his surgical practice in Washington Court House in 1953. Tom was highly respected as a surgeon by his community, patients and colleagues. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Board of Surgery and state and county medical societies.

He is survived by his wife, formerly Joan Elizabeth Burns, whom he married in October 1947. Tom and Joan were the last founding members of the Fayette Bible Church. His avid love of horses was a lifetime hobby. He owned and showed American Saddle Horses. He also became an accomplished farrier.
