In Memory

Our friend and classmate Myron Rokoszak died unexpectedly on Feb. 21, 2014, at the age of 70.

Myron was a reserved and solid citizen of Amherst—a psychology major, dean’s list student and dependable brother in DU. Myron was one of Amherst’s greatest athletes. He was a dominant lineman in football, named to numerous postseason all-star teams and was co-captain of the outdoor track team. Myron received the Ashley Trophy as most valuable football player and the Mossman Trophy as the top senior athlete.

Myron was born in Lusaka, Rhodesia, to parents displaced from their native Poland during World War II. Myron and his family emigrated to the United States via Ellis Island, settling in the small town of South Deerfield, about 10 miles northwest of Amherst. In January 1950, Myron first joined his school class speaking no English. A bilingual Polish-American boy volunteered to help, and Myron’s academic and athletic career was launched. Known by his peers as “the Rock,” Myron graduated from Frontier Regional High School in 1962 as the top scholar and athlete.

After Amherst, Myron went on to a lifelong career as mentor to youth in Western Massachusetts. He returned to Frontier Regional High School, where he spent three decades as teacher, football coach and athletic director. Following his retirement in 2003, Myron and his wife, Amy, moved north to Stoddard, N.H.

As a retiree, Myron enjoyed time spent with his family, traveling with Amy and friends and golfing with old buddies. He took great pride in maintaining the grounds around his home in pristine condition. Myron and Amy were regulars at reunions and homecomings. He and John McKenzie ’66 frequently attended home basketball games together. I last saw Myron at homecoming in October 2013.  He was still a Rock.
