Summer Study Programs in the US

This is a list of summer programs, offered in the US, recommended by the Department. Amherst College does not offer course credit for these courses.

Middlebury: Summer German Study

An intensive immersion program of the Middlebury College German School, this program  covers the equivalent of an academic year of German study in seven weeks and contributes enormously to the student's fluency and confidence in speaking German in a wide variety of settings. Goethe-Institut Summer Programs

Goethe-Institut in Germany offers top-quality language programs throughout Germany. They have two-, four-, and eight-week intensive language courses available in 12 German cities, all of which combine language study with various day trips and cultural activities.  You can learn more about their short-term intensive language courses in Germany on the Goethe-Institut in Germany website. The course calendar includes all program arrival and departure dates.

Portland State University: Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik

The Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik is a five-week program offered by Portland State University. Students speak only German and live together with the faculty on the Lewis & Clark College campus. Courses in language, literature, culture, history, politics and performing arts are designed for undergraduates and graduate students. A two-week Teacher Training Seminar is offered to teachers of German at all levels. Prerequisite is two years of college-level German, or equivalent.

RISE Germany

RISE stands for Research Internships in Science and Engineering. RISE Germany offers undergraduate students from North American, British and Irish universities the opportunity to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions. RISE Germany is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

  • Students are matched with a host university or institute according to their area of interest (biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, or a closely related field)
  • DAAD provides students a monthly stipend for three months to help cover living expenses
  • Host universities, universities of applied sciences (UAS) and institutes provide housing assistance and match students with Ph.D. student mentors or researchers (only UAS)
  • German language is not required and the working language will be in English
