With deep sorrow, we note the passing of our dear friend Bryant Christ. Over the years, Bryant faced many challenges and some personal demons. But Bry passed from this earth knowing he was loved and that his legacy of intelligence, compassion, humility and laughter live on in his beloved niece June, whom he helped raise, and in his son, Alex. Bry’s infectious smile remained throughout his all-too-brief life; now he is at peace.
Bryant’s “Hollywood movie” career began with a summer job as a feature-film location manager soon after graduating from Amherst. Fascinated by film production, he did a post-graduate degree in film at USC, ultimately creating his own production firm. As his business ramped up, however, he made a life-changing—and noble—parenting decision. To provide a more stable home environment for Alex, Bryant became a high school teacher. Thus began a more than 30-year gig in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Bry excelled at teaching, but his mission in life was raising Alex. He reveled in his son’s many accomplishments in sports, in academics and in his medical career.
Bryant’s lust for life was matched only by his intellect and his athletic prowess (he played baseball and football all four years at Amherst), as well as by his deep, lifelong friendships with so many of us in the Amherst and West Hartford communities. Our friend is sorely missed, but we are sure he is in heaven now—and, just as he did at Amherst when he procrastinated while writing his Am Studs thesis, he is vacuuming his room and listening to every damn song ever performed by the rock group Bread over and over again. If we are judged by the people with whom we associate, then being in Bryant’s company lifted us all to greater heights.
