Office of Sustainability’s First Director Sees College as a “Living Lab” for Environmental Innovation

This past summer, Amherst College created the Office of Environmental Sustainability. The office’s first director, hired this fall, is Laura Draucker, whose primary goal in this new role is to “integrate sustainability into the daily life of campus.”

When then-Professor of American Studies John William Ward was named president of Amherst College in 1971, he inherited an institution alight with many of the controversies that the country was experiencing: Protests against the war in Vietnam and demands for racial and gender equality were roiling the student body and challenging core College practices.

But Student Health Educators (SHEs) Morgan Brown ’15 and Liz Mutter ’15 are inspiring their classmates to approach eating at Val with more imagination.

Student Body President’s Goal: Better Connect Government to Constituents

Historically, it has been uncommon for the College’s student government to be led by a non-senior. 2014, however, marks one such year: The Association of Amherst Students (AAS) operated without a president from last May until this past October, when Oluwatomi Williams ’16, better known as Tomi, was elected president in a runoff election. Williams, only a junior, hopes to “rebrand” the AAS and better connect it with the student body.
