50th Reunion
Born in Philadelphia. Attended suburban Philadelphia public schools prior to enrollment at Amherst. Upon graduation from Amherst received a one-year fellowship to perform boy's club leadership work in New York City.
Joined Atlantic Refining Company in 1938, where I was to have a 43-year career, all but the first three of which were devoted to various activities in the field of employee relations and personnel administration. With the merger in 1966 of Atlantic Refining and Richfield Oil Corporation to form Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), was appointed manager of employee relations for the Atlantic Division headquartered in Philadelphia. With further restructuring of the new company, its headquarters were moved to New York City and we took up residence in Chatham Township, N.J. Subsequent to a further merger with Sinclair Oil Corporation, Atlantic Richfield moved to new headquarters in Los Angeles, and we relocated the family to Woodland Hills, Ca.
During my career with ARCO I was privileged to travel for the company throughout its nationwide domestic operations and to several countries in South America. One of my more interesting assignments was to supervise contacts with ARCO employees on loan to Alyeska Pipeline Service Company during the construction of the trans-Alaska pipeline. In this capacity I visited various construction camps and native Alaskan villages in the interior of Alaska, along the route of the pipeline from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez.
Retired from ARCO in 1981 as vice president of employee relations for ARCO Petroleum Products Company, the nationwide refining and marketing operating division of Atlantic Richfield.
Have been happily married for more than 45 years to the former Zoe Wells of Decatur, Ga., a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur and of Simmons College in Boston. Have two daughters. Carolyn resides in Lancaster County, PA., with her husband and our two grandsons, Michael and Jeffrey. Leigh is also married and, with her husband, is living in Prescott, Az.
