In Memory

Frederick Y. “Ted” Peters died Jan. 15 in Gladwyne, Pa. He was surrounded by his three children—Anne, Steve and Ted ’72. He was born and raised in Ardmore, Pa., and graduated from the Haverford School. At Haverford he was a three-sport athlete, captaining the baseball team, and was given the Key Man Award in 1938, Haverford’s highest graduation honor. My father came to Amherst as part of the Hurricane Class of 1942 and was an active member of Psi Upsilon.

In 1940 he left Amherst to complete his obligation for military service and initially served as an enlisted man in the field artillery. By the end of World War II, he had attained the rank of captain and had seen extensive combat action in France and Germany. For most of his business career, he was employed by Raybestos-Manhattan as a sales executive. Upon his retirement, he traveled extensively with his wife, Kathryn, who passed away in 2006.

My father was a lifelong, huge supporter of Amherst, rarely missing a reunion and visiting campus often, especially when I was a student. During my senior year, he attended all 10 of my lacrosse games, both home and away.

A family service was held shortly after his death. He will be buried in Lenox, Mass., this spring.

After leaving Amherst in 1940, I enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard in order to "get my year over with" before returning to college - Ha! December 7, 1941 intervened. Four years were to pass before I was a civilian again. I started as an enlisted man at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, then on to Officers' Candidates School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I became a Battery Commander with the 546th Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theatre of Operations and was discharged in February, 1946.

Meanwhile, I married Kathryn Kuehl, Skidmore '43, in July, 1942. Our children are Anne Peters King, Phi Beta Kappa, Wells College, '65; Stephen, Trinity College, '68, Vanderbilt Law School, '73; and Ted, Amherst '72. We have eleven grandchildren. I entered the family laundry and dry cleaning business, which we sold in 1955 and I then worked for Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc. in sales, retiring in 1981. We have traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. We spend quite a bit of time in our Lenox, Massachusetts home. I am active in church work (accounting warden and treasurer) aswell as several organizations both social and civic. I endeavor to keep fit playing golf in the warm weather with squash and paddle tennis in the winter.
