50th Reunion Book Entry

In Memory

Like so many 1946-ers, Dick had a split experience at Amherst, entering in 1942, then serving in the Navy as a dive-bomber pilot and graduating after the war. Pledging Chi Psi, he struck up a close friendship with a fellow fraternity brother, Doug Abbey ’46, and the two were inseparable throughout college. Shortly after beginning a long career in sales and marketing, Dick married his college “steady,” Ginny Roberts, a frequent and welcome guest at Chi Psi Lodge and at many subsequent class reunions. They lived in Bronxville, and Dick stayed in touch with a number of classmates.

Dick was an excellent golfer, so it was no surprise that he retired to North Carolina, near Pinehurst, where he won several senior championships. But partly from summering in Green Harbor, Mass., he also took up sailing, cruising in Long Island Sound and Down East. Several classmates, including Moose Newman ’46, were treated to day excursions on his yacht, Gin Ricky.

Dick deeply valued his Amherst education, and he and Ginny regularly attended homecomings and reunions. Since Dick and I shared a passion for New York’s professional sports teams, we always had lots to talk about on such occasions. He will be much missed at our 70th reunion.

Jack Thompson ’46

50th Reunion

I don't usually typewrite for publication, but, here goes.
My life style hasn't changed since our last reunion. We're still enjoying life immensely here in the sandhills of North Carolina for about nine months, and then returning to the waters of New England to live aboard our boat for the summer.

One big change, though, is that we sold our sailboat and have a twin engine Grand Banks Trawler. In fact, we're leaving for Maine tomorrow to pick it up.

Our children are in New York, Alabama, Illinois, and Mauii . We see the stateside ones a couple times a year, and the Hawaiians whenever.

There are seven grandchildren aged from 5 to 22. They are all boys except for an eleven year old girl who's going to be our southern belle.

Monroe Diefendorf and I bump into each other only once in a while, and then we promise to make it more regularly.
Ginny and I are both in good health, and are looking forward to our 50TH ...

Best regards to all ,
