In the year since the Amherst faculty approved statistics as a new official major—making it the 38th major in the College’s nearly 200-year history—the renamed Department of Mathematics and Statistics has been busy. This May, Amherst’s first five statistics majors will graduate, and faculty members continue to add courses and hone their offerings.

Some of the most influential Russian avant-garde artists of the early 20th century—Kandinsky, Rodchenko and Gabo, to name a few—are celebrated in a new exhibition at the Amherst Center for Russian Culture.

On view through June 26, КИНЕТИЧЕСКИЕ РИТМЫ: The Dynamic Spirit of Russian Modernism brings together works from the Mead Art Museum’s Thomas P. Whitney ’37 Collection of Russian Art and exemplifies the ways in which artists were able to break free from the prevalent realistic canon in the first three decades of the 20th century.

Saving the Planet and Making It Laugh: Amherst's 2015 Watson Fellowships

Two Amherst College seniors have been awarded Thomas J. Watson Fellowships to explore how other cultures deal with two basic products of human life: laughter and garbage.

David Beron Echavarria ’15 and Richard Altieri ’15 will spend 2015–2016 abroad, learning about, respectively, international methods of waste management and world styles of standup comedy.

The winter of 2015 has been one for the books in New England. The worst storms hit Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, but records were set in Amherst and on campus, too. And adding insult to injury was the relentless cold; February, in fact, was the coldest month in the region on record, according to the local paper.
