In Memory

Ed Anderson died on May 1 after a brief illness. He graduated from Williston Academy as class valedictorian. At Amherst, Ed joined Chi Phi and was a star veteran outfielder for the baseball team. Many will remember his ability to hit the “long ball.” Ed went on to graduate magna cum laude in civil engineering from grad school at UMass—Amherst. Ed was the Sloan Foundation Fellow at Purdue University in 1960.

He spent most of his working years as a registered professional engineer and was principal structural engineer for the construction of 80 buildings in Springfield and Boston. Ed also was a project engineer for General Electric in Pittsfield for 19 years, retiring in 1993. In his younger days, Ed was a top-notch outfielder for two amateur baseball teams in the Springfield area. Among the most important things in Ed’s life were his family, friends and education.

I kept in very close touch with Ed in recent years, talking to him on the phone weekly and meeting him for lunch at least monthly. Ed is survived by three children and three grandchildren.
