Music @ Amherst Today

In Celebration of the 150th Anniversary
of the Amherst College Glee Club
Friday, April 17 - Saturday, April 18, 2015

Amherst has been called The Singing College, and the Amherst College Glee Club, 150 years old this year, is the oldest continuous student organization at the College and one of the first collegiate glee clubs in the nation.

Today there are a wide range of performance opportunities at Amherst, and a music faculty of 10 teaches everything from discovering music to electroacoustic performance and improvisation. This spring's Amherst Today explores an eclectic mix of musical topics with Amherst faculty, as well as filmed selections from an original opera. Finally, participants will enjoy a performance of the Glee Club - either from the audience or as performers - directed by Mallorie Chernin, the director of the choral music program and our lead faculty member.

Speakers include professors Jeffers Englehardt on the integral role music plays in Estonian civic life; Jason Robinson on fiberoptic improvisation, Eric Sawyer on the making of his latest opera,The Garden of Martyrs, David Schneider on Concertos, Violins, and Virtuous Virtuosity, and Mollie Stone '01, director of world music for the Chicago Children's Choir, on Black South African music. Everyone will be able to attend the Glee Club concert on Saturday, April 18, and tenors and basses who prepare two pieces ahead of time may rehearse and join the group on stage for those numbers.
