In Memory

I remember Dave Babbott as a classmate, friend and fraternity brother. We were both active members of the Christian Association. We did field work together in Holyoke, helping young people in the poor sections of the city. Dave was a pre-med student, and I was a pre-seminary student sharing a human concern.

Dave graduated cum laude and then received his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania and completed his medical training in Hartford and in Boston. In 1967 he and his family moved to Burlington, Vt. For 23 years, he was on the faculty of the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. His students and colleagues remember his warmth, listening skills and deep commitment to his work and to their personal and professional growth. His wife, Meredith; his four children; and his 12 grandchildren all supported the strong medical tradition of the Babbott family. His many contributions to medical health and well-being flowed from a generous heart and his devotion.

Amherst honored Dr. Babbott with an honorary doctor of science degree. He contributed much to the American College of Physicians and many other medical organizations. He played an important role in establishing Death with Dignity legislation in the State of Vermont, work that relieved the lives of many who felt the burden of suffering prolonged terminal illnesses in their families. Dave Babbott’s life was one lived with dignity, immense compassion and dedication to our human health and well-being.
