Daniel Charles Moore Jr. died on Sept. 6, 2015, in Seattle. He was a physician, teacher and clinical researcher of international importance in the specialty of regional anesthesia.
At Amherst, Dan was a member of Beta Theta Pi, football (assistant freshman manager, 3; freshman manager, 4), wrestling (1, 2, 3, 4), intramural sports manager (4) Pre-Medical Club (4) and Sphinx Club (4).
He graduated from Northwestern School of Medicine with a passionate interest in anesthesiology and completed a residency in anesthesiology at Wesley Mason Hospital, Seattle. From 1945 to 1947 he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and then joined the Mason Clinic Partnership, a 15-member group, as chief and director of anesthesiology at the Virginia Mason Hospital. In 1950 he established a resident training program that was fully approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Within 10 years the department became nationally and internationally known as a leader and for its expertise in the administration of regional anesthesia in surgical and obstetrical procedures. He also established the first “in-house” anesthesia service, available 24–7 nationwide.
Dan retired from the Mason Clinic Partnership in 1983 but continued to teach at the University of Washington Medical School. He was a clinical professor since 1963. His method of teaching was unique—he worked in the OR “hands on” with fellow anesthesiologists from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and France. He published four books, wrote more than 200 articles and made nine teaching videos.
He had memberships in many anesthesia societies with executive positions. Many awards were attributed to his dedication to his specialty, and to his lifetime of excellent care of his patients.
He is survived by four children: Barbara Strauss, Nancy M. VanAmerongen, Daniel C. Moore Jr. and Susan P. Moore; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
